Mechanical Engineering • Rose-Hulman '30 • Open to summer 2027 internships

Ambrose Sigler

I'm a freshman studying mechanical engineering at Rose-Hulman. I design parts in Fusion 360, fabricate them in the shop, and write software when a project calls for it. I'm looking for a summer 2027 internship.

Why hardware

Intelligence needs a body

I like AI and I like building physical things. A robot needs both, which is a big part of why I chose mechanical engineering.

So far I have pursued the two separately: robot parts on my FTC team, and an AI server I put together in my room. I'd like to try running a vision model on a real machine at some point. I haven't done that yet.

Data Center Test Fit Visualizer

At Fabtek I built a WordPress plugin that takes a street address and works out the biggest data-center building that fits on that lot. The company uses it for early site studies.

It pulls the parcel boundary from the county's ArcGIS service, applies the city's setback rules (I entered the zoning for 16 cities into a PostgreSQL database), cuts out creeks and other water using USGS data, and then computes the largest rectangle that fits in what remains.

I handled the web design as well as the engineering, and I have since redesigned Fabtek's entire website from the ground up, with the tool built in.

FTC Robotics, Mechanical Team

Designed robot parts in Fusion 360 and 3D-printed them. My chassis concept was picked second out of seven designs. Built the competition robots on the bandsaw, drill press, lathe and mill, and competed at three events.

Local AI Inference Server

I wanted to run large language models on my own hardware. I put an OCuLink adapter in the spare M.2 slot of my old gaming laptop, cut a hole in the bottom of the case for the cable, and connected a liquid-cooled RTX 3090 running off its own power supply.

The laptop runs Linux with no screen attached, and I connect to it from anywhere over Tailscale. I'm now building a micro-ATX version with 64 GB of RAM and two 3090s.

Engineering Site Surveys

I measured existing buildings for Google and biotech projects and drew up field sketches. The architects used my dimensions in their construction drawings.

Portrait of Ambrose Sigler

I'm from San Jose. I'm a freshman at Rose-Hulman studying mechanical engineering, and I run cross country and track for the school.

In high school I was cross country captain. We made the state meet for the first time since 2006, and my best 5K is 16:28. I also captained three charity 6K teams that raised $16,400 for clean water.

Away from class and practice I go backpacking, tinker with my server, and work on websites like this one. I am also consistently ranked in the top 20 in the world for typing the alphabet. My record for A to Z is 1.504 seconds.
